Fuente Ovejuna by Lope De Vega

This production of Fuente Ovejuna has been created by second
year students and their tutors on the BA
(Hons) Acting & Global Theatre programme at the London School of Film, Media
& Performance
Based on an historical incident in Castile in 1476, Fuente
Ovejuna charts the journey of rural villagers from romance to
revolution. British playwright Steve Gooch lends a
contemporary twist to Lope de Vega's classic of the Spanish Golden
Age.
Although written in 1619, Fuente Ovejuna's themes of community
solidarity and the heroism of 'ordinary people' bear strong
parallels to recent events such as the 'Arab Spring.' De
Vega's challenges to gender roles and to established social
hierarchies also have strong resonances with our own
times.
All the characters in Fuente Ovejuna undergo a journey
of discovery - in the heroine Laurencia's words - to
understand what it is to be human, to have dignity and
self-respect.
