Bob Schuler
Bob Dennis Schuler
was born in Minnesota, USA. He attended local schools and was
active in Boy Scout work. Subsequently, he attended the United
States Military Academy at West Point and graduated with a BSc in
engineering.
Military assignments took him to Germany, Brazil, Turkey,
Portugal and Vietnam as well as tours in US locations, including
the Pentagon. He commanded military units and served in staff
positions, specializing in strategic planning and public affairs.
While in Washington, he also attended The American University,
where he received an MA in Communication and studied for a PhD in
International Affairs. Overseas work included nine years as a
military attaché with US embassies.
After voluntary retirement in 1980 as a Colonel, he went into
business as a consultant and later set up his own executive
training company in Portugal. He served as an advisor to companies,
embassies, and to US and Portuguese government figures including,
for 10 years, the President of Portugal.
In 1992 he moved to England and engaged in voluntary work with
local schools, a Community Health Council and NHS related
organizations. In 2002 he was selected as a non-executive director
of a Strategic Health Authority, a post he held for the four year
life of the organization. This included responsibility for equality
and diversity, Chair of the clinical governance committee and
member of the audit, risk management and remuneration
committees.
He has lectured on Communication at universities in Portugal,
and educational institutions in the USA, and has taught European
Studies, Portuguese and Spanish at a college in England.
Bob is currently acting chairman of a charitable company trust
dedicated to improving the health of his local community. He is
also a director of a local, health oriented trust.
Hobbies include travel, reading, theatre, music and public
speaking. He is conversant in seven languages, to varying
degrees.
Bob became a Trustee of Regent’s College in February 2007
and is a member of the Finance & General Purposes
Committee.
