Transnational Management Research

The Scope of Transnational Management Research

"Transnational Management received some attention as many organisations have become “stateless” avoiding national borders and thus also often avoiding certain regulations (Eom 1994 and Bob 2005). As Eom (1994) puts it systematically, many managers believe that “the trend toward statelessness is unmistakable and irreversible” because it helps solving trade problems (e.g. companies can overcome trade barriers by setting up factories in other countries), avoiding political problems, allowing better exploitation of innovations globally. This move requires transnational management support systems and an overall transnational vision and understanding."

Transnational Organisations

"Some scholars attempted to measure Transnationality but there is still a long way to go to set rules on this. However, Transnational Organisations are a reality and increasing in numbers in line with the progress of globalisation. It is important to understand the differences between various international businesses to understand the Transnational organisation/firm.

While international firms are largely based in their domestic countries they operate as importers and exporters with limited intention of overseas investments, the multinational and global firms’ efforts are based on such investments outside their home countries and they focus on global segments and global offerings although some effort goes into synergies arising from the multinational setting.

The transnational organisation would typically have a more complex structure in its operations where decision making is spread over several countries and substantial portions of their upward and downward operations are based outside the home country. Similarly, significant portions of staff are located in different countries. Such organisations may have a central corporate facility but their value chain activities are spread across the countries they operate. Thus the organisation is not dependent on one country while also seeking synergies arising from operations in different countries" (Sirkeci, 2011).

Current research projects in this stream include:

  • Transnational market success and the role of PEST factors (Ibrahim Sirkeci, A. Vicol, E. Dogan)
  • Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) (Emre Ipekci-Cetin)
  • Dependencies of financial markets (Koray Cetin)
