Katherine
Boivin

Katherine Boivin was attracted by the structure of the Fashion Marketing degree, the location of the campus and the teachers. She felt Marylebone was a fantastic location to study fashion with a great variety of shops around to get inspired.

Nationality: Canada
Programme: BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing

I was interested in fashion but not the design aspect. The structure of the Fashion Marketing course was perfect for me since it covered the business side of fashion and introduced me to different aspect of the industry like branding, buying and merchandising, CAD skills and creative marketing. I was also happy the course covered areas like art history and the development of a personal brand.

Gaining useful skills

I have learned to master many skills such as time management, being organised, writing clear essays and to work to obtain what you want. I’ve learned from fashion industry experts about what they do. I’ve also gained from hearing about the amazing past and background of my teachers and this gave me so many insights into the industry.

I loved the diversity of my classes. My favourite class was Event Management and Fashion Shows. I got to be the show caller for the graduate fashion show in December 2014 and absolutely loved the experience.

The most challenging aspect of my studies is to come up with innovative, creative and exciting ideas for all my projects. It is very interesting looking back on all my projects and seeing the diversity and my improvement. I used the Academic Skills services and found it indispensable. It helped me so much with the structure of my reports and essays.

Work experience

I did work experience for Saatchi Masius over the summer and I loved it. I got to see how advertising agencies work. It wasn’t directly related to fashion but it was what I needed to understand the role of marketing and understand the difference between advertising and marketing.

It was great to have access to all the events taking place in London – the shopping and fashion presence everywhere, and the students from all around the world. I felt very close to the action when I assisted at events like the Vogue night out, the Vogue Festival, and London Fashion Week, and attended talks by influential speakers and even music gigs.
