Banking & Bank Accounts

Before you arrive in London, it's a good idea to contact your bank for advice on using your account abroad. Your currrent bank can usually help you set up a UK account and help you transfer money into your new UK account.

Also find out; Whether you be able to withdraw money in UK cash machines using your cash card? Plus how much will your bank charge for this?

Opening a Bank Account

You will almost definitely need to open a bank account while you are living in the UK. To do this, you will need to complete an application form from the bank and provide any documents that they request e.g. passport, a letter confirming you are a student (available on request from the International Programmes Office) and proof of your address in London or at home.

The Student Services can help you with this. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash with you.

If you need to bring a large lump-sum over with you, use travellers cheques or wait until you have arrived and then have it transferred to your British account.

"My MA has benefited me in a number of ways. The many different cultures represented by students on the programme, their ways of working and their lifestyles has given me a broader perspective on the world, which I have found useful in my consultancy job."
