Study abroad placements - Advice for Disabled Students

Students with disabilities and specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, are encouraged to discuss their options with their Study Abroad Advisor well in advance of arranging their period of study abroad. The Study Abroad Advisor and student can liaise with the Disability Officer to discuss specific needs, as required.

Staff at the International Partnerships Office actively encourage and support all students wishing to participate in study abroad programmes. However, it is important that students are aware of the specific difficulties and challenges they may face while abroad. Some countries do not provide the same level of support that is available in the UK. It is the student’s decision whether they wish to disclose the nature of their disability to the study abroad institution.

If they do not disclose their disability then the institution will not know about any specific needs they may have resulting from it. Students therefore may wish to discuss this further with their Study Abroad Advisor.
