Statement From a Previous Student Union President
Hubertus Halmburger writes about his time as Student Union
president at Regent's College, the skills he learnt during his
presidency and how it's helped him in his private and business
life.
My
time as President of Regent's College Student Union helped shape my
studies and gave me the opportunity to develop my communication and
negotiation skills. The learning curve is steep because you
are facing new and unexpected challenges day by day.
The role of Student Union
President requires meeting and dealing with students, staff,
academics plus other organisations outside of the college itself.
Here, networking is the key to success and leads to an
improved education and personal development.
All the job interviews I've
attended so far have started with the question "Tell me
something about your time as Student Union President" - which
shows the impact on employers of a voluntary, yet highly
professional and challenging position.
The position of Student Union President
gives the individual the chance of 'learning by doing', and it
gave me a deep insight into working and prepared me for the
business world.
I recommend anyone wishing to put their
leadership and negotiating skills into practice, and who cares
about the student life, to consider working as part
of the Student Union. Not only will you be putting something
back into Regent's College but you will also be taking
with you developed skills that will help
you succeed in your private and business lives.

"I’m really glad that I did a semester in New York - I learnt so much from the people, the city, and the university. My expectation of living in the USA and discovering a new culture was met, and I expect to go back there after my studies."
