Buying and Merchandising

The module develops your understanding of how the buying and merchandising roles operate and integrate with other retail functions such as design, marketing and retail management in the successful development and selling of seasonal fashion ranges. It will cover a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge and insights specifically related to the vocational buying and merchandising retailer functions. Students will consider a variety of factors in range planning including commercially balanced groups of design options, lead times, the significance of pricing strategies, effective sourcing strategies, the movement of stock into and around the business, and the use of merchandising data to help in the development of a range plan. It is studied on one full day a week for the duration of the first term.

Professional and Employability Skills 1

The aim of this module is to develop an appropriate portfolio of knowledge and skills which will allow you to make a successful transition into your chosen fashion career. The module features a mix of commercially focused hard and soft skills, which refer both to the generic and specialist knowledge, skills and personal attributes needed for success in the job. Professional and Employability Skills 1 is focused primarily on the mix of generic and industry focused knowledge and skills needed to help you research prepare and apply for jobs in the fashion sector you have chosen. It will cover preparation for job applications, personal marketing, networking and interview performance. The scope is international, taking into account different working practices across the world, with learnings relevant across many different job roles within the broader fashion sector. The module is delivered utilizing both the resources of Regent’s dedicated Careers and Business Relations team and the specialist staff on your programme.

Fashion Culture: History, Theory, Creativity

The aim of this module is to allow you to develop your knowledge of fashion history from the late 19th century to the present day. Balancing this are lectures on the fashion industry – how it works and how it is changing, including retail, manufacturing and the luxury sector. You will also learn how to analyse creativity in styling, photography and digital innovation as much as in fashion design. The scope is global and broad-minded, exploring how trends evolve and how fashion interlinks with many other creative sectors, for application to fashion and broader lifestyle journalism.

Introduction to Textiles and Product Manufacturing

The aim of this module is to develop your commercial fashion knowledge with a broad understanding and appreciation of fabrics, garment construction and their manufacture. It will provide you with an understanding of how garments are made including the essentials of mass-market manufacture. This will include a fundamental understanding of the key design characteristics that impact on clothing manufacture and an overview of textile technology and terminology. Covering a cross-section of product types, it will address fabric and garment performance and respond to a demand for a greater understanding of the fashion business.

The module also explores the product development cycle from the initial design idea, mood boards and colour palette creation, through to sampling, costing and final production.

Marketing and Distribution

The module complements buying and merchandising by exploring in detail the strategic and operational marketing contexts in which fashion ranges are created and sold. It also tackles how marketing impacts on buying and merchandising strategic planning and implementation. You will study a range of marketing and retailing theory and models relating to fashion markets, consumer profiling and behaviour, branding, communication and distribution channel management. This will be at both the mass and luxury ends of fashion. These will be applied in the context of brand management in both the mass and luxury fashion markets.  It is studied on one full day a week for the duration of the second term.

Sustainability and Ethics in Fashion

The module aims to develop your understanding of the specific sustainability and ethical issues arising in contemporary fashion and to examine areas of overlap between the two. You will develop an understanding of the substantial ethical challenges facing the fashion industry, particularly with regard to the need to develop a sustainable ethos for the fashion system in a world of finite resources. Sustainability and ethics within the fashion industry are investigated with a dual focus on the supply side and the context in which demand for fashion products is created.

It aims to provide an understanding of the ethical challenges faced by the fashion industry dealing with heavily marketed and promoted products, from high street through to luxury. It will also address the diversity of issues arising from retailer’s and brands’ approaches to design, sourcing and manufacture of fashion products in the supply chain.

Final Project: Trading and Response to change

This module aims to develop your understanding of how to respond to in-season changes in demand, influenced by a variety of external macro factors beyond the retailer’s control. Pre-season range planning needs to be supported by an ability to take effective action in response to negative influences on demand. Retail sales are vulnerable to many industry forces including deteriorating economic conditions, increasing or intense competition or even unseasonal weather conditions. Equally there is always the possibility that a range may include some poor fashion decisions. Consequently you need to be able to recognise when data is becoming a trend and to determine the appropriate response using a range of tactical retail merchandising and marketing options. You will work in teams in a role play scenario making decisions consistent with specific retail functions that address issues in the case scenario presented to you.

Professional and Employability Skills 2

The aim of this module is to develop an appropriate portfolio of knowledge and skills which will allow you to make a successful transition into your chosen fashion career. You will require a diverse range of commercial and professional skills in order to meet the fast evolving and competitive challenges you are likely to face in your future careers. The module will feature a mix of commercially focused hard and soft skills, which refer both to the generic and specialist knowledge, skills and personal attributes needed for success in the job.

Professional and Employability Skills 2 is focused primarily on the mix of generic and specialist industry focused knowledge and skills needed to help you ‘hit the ground running’ on entering a job. This will involve a more specific and vocational set of knowledge and skills which will vary according to your chosen fashion career. The scope is international, taking into account different working practices across the world, with learnings relevant across many different job roles within your chosen fashion sector. The module is delivered primarily by the specialist staff on your programme.
