International Relations - BA

This is an American degree, four years in length (see the 'structure' tab for more information).

The International Relations major emphasises the understanding of global issues and world cultures, and traces the political, social, ideological and economic history of the world.

You will develop a detailed knowledge of the major branches of the field, including international security, foreign policy, international political economy, international law and organisations and the international relations theory that holds it all together.
 
The curriculum is interdisciplinary and you will examine the complexities of different regions in the world, international organisations, diplomacy, war and peace, and human rights.

Four courses in a non-native language are required (this is waived for who are studying in English as their second language).

This is an American degree, four years in length, which allows you to focus on a main interest while at same time offering a breadth and depth to your studies.

The degree is built upon four components: general education, major, minor and electives. Students must complete a minimum of 128 credit hours across the degree components.

Major
Your major is your primary area of academic specialisation, in this case International Relations. It is possible to complete a double major. The flexibility of our course structure allows you to adjust your studies up to the end of your second year.

General Education
You must successfully complete the appropriate general education programme, which is designed to give breadth to your degree.

Electives
You have a choice of elective modules to complete the required 128 credit hours of your BA.

Minor (Optional)
You may elect to complete an approved minor in an area of study different from your major. A minor is a lesser concentration in a given subject area. You may declare a minor at any time during your degree. You have the option of selecting up to two minors.
A minimum of 18 credit hours must be completed in a single discipline in order to receive a minor. We offer the following minors:

From 2015 all new students will follow the Global Citizenship Programme (GCP), which is being phased in to replace the previous General Education Programme.

The GCP amounts to 30 credit hours of your degree total.

You will take a common First Year Seminar and a Keystone Seminar.

Applicants must provide evidence of successful completion of 12 years of schooling, with a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 in the American High School grading system or equivalent. This is calculated on a scale of 0-4, with a 2.5 roughly equivalent to a C+/B-.

For those applicants whose mother tongue is not English, we require a recent pass in any of the following qualifications:

  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, grade C
  • GCSE/IGCSE English, grade C (for non-EU IGCSE students, please provide along with the IGCSE certificate, the Supplementary Certifying Statement with the breakdown of component grades)
  • IB Diploma English A grade 4 or above HL or SL. English B grade 5 at HL
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with an overall score of 6.0 (for non-EU students: a minimum score of 5.5 in each component)
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 80 on the internet-based test (TOEFL results not accepted post 17 April 2014 for non EU/UK students)
  • Pearson Test (PTE Academic) score of 53 (for non-EU Students: a minimum score of 51 in each component)

How to apply

Applying to study at RUL is a quick and easy process. We accept direct applications, have no formal application deadlines and there is no application fee.

Step 1 Apply

Please complete an application form. You can apply in the following ways:

Once you have completed the application form, you should send us the following supporting documents; these can be sent to us via email/post/fax:

  • Copies of academic transcripts and certificates from all previous studies (i.e. secondary school and/or university)
  • Two letters of reference, one of which must be academic; the second can be academic, personal (cannot be from a family member or a peer) or professional
  • A 300-500 word personal statement outlining the reasons for applying to your chosen course at RUL and how you feel you will benefit from the course of study
  • A copy of your passport photograph (ID) page
  • One recent passport-sized, colour photograph, jpeg format (this must be emailed to us to: admit@regents.ac.uk)
  • If not a native English speaker, proof of your English proficiency

Step 2 Making an offer

We will assess whether you meet our minimum entry requirements and will make you an offer by both email and post, or notify you that you have been unsuccessful.

If you have completed your education and have met all the entry requirements, you will be sent an unconditional offer. If you still have to finish your exams, or have yet to submit supporting documentation, you will be issued a conditional offer.

You can expect to receive a decision on your application within 10 working days of receipt of your completed application and supporting documents.

Step 3 Accepting the offer

If you wish to accept the offer you must:

  • Confirm your acceptance via email/post/telephone/in person
  • Pay the refundable registration fee
  • Pay the refundable non-EU advance tuition fee deposit (if applicable)

Please note, while there is no formal deadline to pay your registration fee or non-EU advance deposit, if you need to apply for an international student visa to study in the UK, then we recommend that you pay these as soon as possible.

Step 4 Full acceptance and visa

On receipt of your acceptance we will issue the final set of documentation and, where needed, the relevant visa support documentation. To find out if you need a student visa please consult the section titled ‘Studying in the United Kingdom’ on the UK Border Agency website: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk (please note it is your own responsibility to arrange the appropriate visa).

Transfer of credits

Transfer applicants must complete their applications by submitting all the supporting documentation required from freshman applicants.

If you have completed fewer than 30 credit hours or equivalent at your current institution we will need your official high school transcript in addition to your current undergraduate transcript.

If you have completed 30 or more credit hours, or equivalent, we only require your official undergraduate transcripts.

Once we have received your complete application, and if you have been accepted for admission, we will advise you on the number of credits you will be able to transfer towards your degree.

As part of its public benefit commitment, the University wants to ensure that no student is deterred from applying to Regent’s University London because of financial difficulties. Study methods

You will be taught by a group of internationally diverse academics and practitioners with vast experience in academia and outside it.

Hands-on learning experience is key. You will provide policy solutions to case studies, then discuss and defend the proposed solutions with peers and faculty members.

Classes and seminars give you ample opportunity to develop public-speaking skills via presentations and opportunities to present at conferences.

You will also have the opportunity to attend the Model United Nations in New York.

You will gain experience in using research methodology and learn how to process information, developing your statistical skills and use of newly available software.

Earn both US and a UK degree

On graduation you will earn a degree from Webster University, USA. You will also have the opportunity to apply for a UK degree in Liberal Arts awarded by Regent’s University London in recognition of your achievement with Webster. This is an additional degree award which does not require further study or fees.

To apply for the UK degree, you must have graduated from your Webster University programme and at least half of the programme credits you have gained must have been studied at Regent’s.
