Herman Van Rompuy, President Emeritus of the European Council and former Prime Minister of Belgium, is the lead speaker for this year's Jean Monnet Memorial Lecture.
A distinguished panel will debate the role of EU decision-making and how to ensure the European Union institutions are accountable to EU citizens. The lecture is based on a new paper written by the Senior European Experts (SEE) for this joint seminar with Regent’s Institute of Contemporary European Studies.
Herman Van Rompuy: former Prime Minister of Belgium and President Emeritus of the European Council. A former economist at the National Bank of Belgium, Mr Van Rompuy began his political career in 1973 and has held various positions, including Minister of Budget, Minister of State, and Secretary of State for Finance and Small Businesses.
The Rt Hon Chris Grayling, MP: Chris Grayling is a Conservative politician who has been Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council since 2015. He was Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice from 2012 to 2015. From 2010 to 2012 Grayling was Minister of State for Employment. In September 2012, he was appointed to the Cabinet as Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, the first non-lawyer to have served as Lord Chancellor for at least 440 years.
Andy Lebrecht: Member of the Senior European Experts (SEE) group, former UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the European Union in Brussels and a former UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the EU handling negotiations in Brussels on competitiveness, the environment, fisheries, energy and other key policy areas. He was also Director General for Food and Farming at Defra and Principal Private Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, and during the 2001 Foot and mouth disease emergency was Director of Operations in Devon.
Vicky Pryce: previously Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting, Director General for Economics at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills , and Joint Head of the UK Government Economic Service. As well as holding a number of academic posts, she is currently a Fellow of the Society of Business Economists and co-founded Good Corporation, a company set up to promote corporate social responsibility.
Each speaker will bring a different approach to the subject based on their very different backgrounds and expertise and contribute through short talks to the evening discussion.
After input from the panel there will be an opportunity for questions and observations from the audience.
The lecture will be chaired by Regent’s University London Chancellor, Professor John Drew, and will be followed by a networking reception in the Herringham Hall from 20:00 for students and invited guests to meet distinguished visitors and alumni.

Chris Grayling is a BritishConservative Partypolitician who has been Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council since 2015. He was Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice from 2012 to 2015.
First elected to Parliament in the 2001 general election for Epsom and Ewell, Grayling was first appointed to the Shadow Cabinet of David Cameron in 2005 as Shadow Secretary of State for Transport. From 2007 he became the Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, and in 2009 he was appointed Shadow Home Secretary.
Following the 2010 general election and the formation of the Coalition Government, Grayling was made the Minister of Statefor Employment. In September 2012, he was appointed to the Cabinet in a reshuffle, replacing Kenneth Clarke as Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice. He is the first non-lawyer to have served as Lord Chancellor for at least 440 years.
