In February 2011, the European Council set 2014 as the deadline for achieving a single market in energy in the EU. Despite this commitment and some progress being made, this target date was missed. In the Strategic Agenda for the next five years adopted by EU leaders in June 2014, there was a renewed commitment to what is now described as energy union, the possiblity of which the panel will discuss.
A team of distinguished speakers, including: Nick Butler (Visiting Professor & Chair of the King’s Policy Institute, King’s College London), Stephen Tindale (Research Fellow, Centre for European Reform and former Executive Director of Greenpeace), Andy Lebrecht (Former UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the EU), Dr Amelia Hadfield, Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Canterbury Christ Church University and chaired by Professor John Drew (Chancellor and Director of iCES). The panel will debate these issues with an audience of students, policy-makers and friends of the University.
