Where Angels Fear to Tread: finding a new approach to the body and sexuality in psychotherapy and psychotherapy training
Gabriella Ricciardi-Otty will be presenting 'Where Angels Fear to Tread: finding a new approach to the body and sexuality in psychotherapy and psychotherapy training'.
Just like angels – immaterial beings and dwellers of the heavens – traditional psychotherapists remain intrinsically engaged in a lofty pursuit largely unconnected with the bodily vicissitudes of human existence. And just like angels – pure and luminous beings who only ever hover above the surface of the earth, who never dare to touch the coarse texture of human life or delve into the crevices of human needs and desires – psychotherapy's approach to sexuality remains ambivalent and confused, fraught and dismissive at times, and inevitably, to a greater or lesser extent, informed by individual, societal and cultural beliefs.
This promises to be a fascinating workshop which will create an opportunity to discuss the need for a deeper understanding of the body and sexuality – the therapist's as well as the client's – in psychotherapy training, supervision and practice as well as encouraging participants to engage in their own processes of self-dialogue and self-search around these aspects.
