Gabriella always felt she wanted to be in the hub of London. While she was looking around at universities and came to Regent’s, she knew that she wanted to study here. She found the campus was beautiful and the course was exactly what she wanted from a degree.

Nationality: UK
Programme: BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing

I had previously studied fashion photography and fashion design so I knew I had a creative spark inside me, but I didn’t want to sit at the sewing machine or behind the camera. Through research, I understood that my passion came from the ideal of the fashion brands that were marketed to me, so I wanted to go down the marketing route. This course was exactly what I wanted and I attended a fantastic marketing exhibition from the previous year which just made me more excited.

Practical exercises

During the three years of my course, I’ve helped set up fashion shows, and played around with different styles in photography. The most challenging aspects were also the most beneficial. For example, we had various live projects from industry experts, with panel presentations. These really helped prepare us for the future.

The value of work experience

I’ve done a few internships while being at university and I also work part-time in retail to gain experience. Internships are really valuable and will give you contacts you never thought you could get. I’ve had internships at Ethical Fashion Forum, Closer magazine and more recently Bodymetrics. They were all very different, so I made different contacts and learned about different aspects of the marketing world.

I lived in student accommodation for the first year, which was the best decision I made. I gained lifelong friends from accommodation so for the second year we all moved in together in a house. There are five of us and it’s been the best experience.

A social whirl

Social life at Regent’s is hard to keep up with – there are events going on all the time, from masquerade balls to pizza and beer lunches, there’s always space for a break from studying and enjoying the student life. They have an amazing boxing program every Thursday, and I also signed up for Mandarin lessons every Tuesday night. There are various academic workshops going on throughout the year, which have helped me so much for my dissertation.

The community at Regent’s is full of fun people, everyone is from so many different backgrounds with different cultures so it’s exciting to get to know everyone and make friends with people all over the world. Many of the tutors come from across the world, which is also really beneficial as they have contacts that you can gain from too.

Help from Student Services

I have frequently used Student Services. Emma Dempsey, who is responsible for academic skills training, has helped me throughout my third year. I’m actually really confident with writing but academically she was a massive help and really helped me understand the structures that I needed to know, even though I am doing a creative course.

I’m hopefully going on to do my Masters next year and make my way into the advertising world. I obviously hope to work within the fashion world, but I’m more excited about the marketing side.
