Alumna Courtenay Magrath, who graduated from Regent's having studied BA Acting and Global Theatre, is now working on a TV show picked up by Amazon and Hulu.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am currently waiting for one feature film which is in post production and I have begun rehearsals for another feature film and a TV show which has been picked up by Amazon, Hulu and is in talks with Netflix. I am also writing a TV series and will soon begin rehearsals for a play that I have written.
Tell us about your journey from graduation to where you are now.
Initially I had to put acting on hold however managed to do some projects in my spare time – weekends/after work/holidays. I have managed to move back to London so that I can continue to work and do projects more easy in my spare time however come March I will be acting full time.
What are your plans for the future?
In March I will be acting full time so the pressure is on to ensure that money is made. I imagine I will increase my jobs in commercial and corporate due to this. I also aim to get my TV series made so I cannot wait to go through the full pitching process.
How did your studies at Regent’s impact on you professionally and/or personally?
My work ethic and industry knowledge helped as we had people coming in to speak which really helped. But also, I learnt what not to do which is sometimes more important that what actions you should take. The teachers prepared me vocally, physically but more importantly they gave me insights and a safe place to learn so that I feel I can always come back to them to ask any questions which I am unsure of.
What is your funniest/fondest/best memory of Regent’s?
Too many – Kwong's (lecturer in Film, Media and Performance) numerous sayings and mishearing things, the final showcase as we could all see how far we all got individually and as a group.
What advice would you give to recent graduates starting out in their careers?
Be friendly to everyone that you meet and do not try to ‘outdo’ anyone. Just make friends and enjoy the process and those friends will help you out in the future.
What three words best describe the experience that Regent’s provides?
Encouraging diversity and people’s differences. With the lack of diversity in the industry, Regent’s really encourages people to acknowledge and accept others differences but also to hold them in high esteem – not to be ashamed.
