Our latest innovator to launch his big idea on the world is RBS London alumnus, David Toure. Graduating with a degree in Global Business Management was only the start for David and he is now the driving force behind a new social network that aims to bring entrepreneurs together. We caught up with him to find out more.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I must admit, I am not the usual type. For as long as I can remember I’ve never been someone to just accept things the way they are. I automatically try to find ways they can be improved, to meet their full potential. I enjoy the analysis process of trying to find what is missing in order to make something better, to make it the best it can be.
Thanks to my studies I quickly realised my strengths and my weaknesses. The tasks that required the least creative input I struggled to perform well in, and when there were opportunities to be creative I really strived. When I say “creative” I think about ‘improving’, ‘innovating’, ‘influencing’, ‘convincing’, ‘being original’. That’s what drives me.
About four years ago while studying at Regent's Business School London, the experience I had in one of the modules was clearly the starting point for my entrepreneurial aspirations. Therefore, I can only thank Regent’s University London and its nice and studious environment for allowing me to rediscover my creative talent.
While going from one idea to another, it was just after being accepted for my masters at UCL that I decided: “I want to launch a project in the next few years”. I never would have thought this project could be Creation Leaders. At 26, I am ready for the adventure.
What’s the big idea?
The big idea is to create a new social network. A refreshing social network: Creation Leaders.
Creation Leaders will be a platform for entrepreneurship and networking. With the emergence of crowd funding platforms during the last 5 years such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Ulule, I realised there was really something to do there. The system of crowd funding is relatively simple: the web users give money to projects or causes that they like and want to see succeed. The crowd funding platforms offer a web space to allow such exchanges. For more details regarding the way crowd funding works I invite you to go and try one of the main players above.
Of course, after surfing on these platforms for a certain time, I asked myself the usual questions: Why do I not enjoy being on these platforms to give my money to promising projects? Why do I feel most of the projects will not succeed anyway? Why do I not have the passion to go on these platforms every day to look at new projects? Why do I feel there is something missing?
Finally, Creation Leaders came into place. I decided I want to create a social network for entrepreneurship; see it as a Linkedin for entrepreneurship. People will have their own profiles like on a social network but instead of having a CV description or a ‘wall’, they will have the page of the current project they want to collect money for. We plan to include many key functionalities and nice features to the site to create a great social platform of creativity, friendship, and successful projects where people will go to every day or two.
What made you want to become an entrepreneur?
The idea to innovate, make and create which fuels a sense of involving from one business to the next, through wounds and success. In this case, it’s purely the concept to motivate other start-ups on a more permanent approach which doesn’t undermine money as a common denominator, and help individuals develop their creativity and become innovators, leaders.
I also can’t deny that the fame and fortune you can get from truly innovative ideas is a desire.
Do you think there is an entrepreneurial spirit at Regent’s University London?
The spirit in my opinion is based on the drives and mechanism the university has availed to its students, this can be seen through intrinsic motivation where interest, engagement and stimulation are at least felt by the majority of the students. But above all, it’s the legacy the university has created and continues to endeavour which is the building block and contributing factor in the entrepreneurial mojo.
