A special celebration of clothing and culture will be launched with a private show of the ‘Marguerite J. Dennis Costume Collection’ at Regent’s University London on Wednesday 25 October from 16:30-18:00.
The exhibition will open to the public at the University’s Knapp Gallery from Thursday 26 October to Saturday 9 December 2017, and will showcase a collection of traditional dresses, hand-stitched jackets and footwear from countries including China, Korea, India, Vietnam, Senegal and the Middle East.
The items have all been personally collected and donated by Regent’s Trustee, Marguerite J. Dennis, to support teaching and learning in areas including Fashion Design and Art History. The items will also develop specialist knowledge in exhibition curation for both Regent’s and local school students.
Discussing the significance of the collection, built up during her time as Vice-President of Suffolk University in Boston, UK, Marguerite explains:
“As I have travelled to more than 50 countries I decided that I would collect costumes and artefacts from each of the places I visited.
“Some of the items have been worn traditionally in their countries of origin for hundreds of years, and this show will offer an extraordinary opportunity to view pieces which are rarely seen in the UK.
“I hope that what I have now gifted to Regent’s University London will allow students to learn about different cultures and clothing.”
Julia Weiner, Senior Lecturer in Art History at Regent’s University London, adds:
“This collection will offer our students and others within the local community the opportunity to learn about the cultural significance of clothing by working with and studying items from around the world.
“Students will also learn how to catalogue, preserve and exhibit a collection. This is a very exciting and enriching donation for the University to receive and we extend our heartfelt thanks to Marguerite for her very generous gift.
“We’re further delighted that Isabella Coraca, Curatal Assistant at Kensington Palace, will be assisting us with the cataloguing and storage of this new collection, which will involve our students throughout the process.”
