What to expect

Regent's has an excellent reputation for developing aspiring film professionals. In recent years, eight graduates have won Royal Television Society Awards for their final year projects, while others have been nominated for BAFTA and IFTA awards and contributed to titles including 1917, The Crown, Kneecap, The Witcher, Vigil, The Devil’s Hour, Shetland, The Art of Love, The Athena, Cats and One of Us – in roles as diverse as creative directors, cinematographers, VFX producers and acquisitions managers.

This industry-focused course, which offers full-time (one year) and part-time (two years) entry points, not only teaches you how to how to film and produce your own creative projects, but also how to brand them, promote them and pitch them to investors – enabling you to graduate with a unique skillset that sets you apart from the crowd.

From day one, you’ll collaborate with professional actors, filmmakers and creatives on a wide range of projects – researching, producing, directing, filming, editing and marketing your own group films. You’ll take on various industry roles, experiment with new technology and techniques, and work on practical assignments that reflect real industry practices.

You'll learn to a guide a short film concept through the stages of development and refinement into an engaging pitch ready for selection – creating crowdfunding campaigns to build an audience and secure funding; writing detailed pre-production documents including storyboards, shot lists and schedules; scouting locations and casting talent (learning how effective planning can prevent costly delays during shooting); organising reshoots and pickups; developing comprehensive promotion and distribution strategies and festival release plans. You'll improve your confidence in ideation, storytelling, branding, marketing and pitching – and gain a deeper understanding of the professional standards required for packaging a short film for the market.

As part of one of your modules, you’ll attend an internationally accredited film festival to gain insights into the launch process and attend a variety of guest lectures on campus to hear from practitioners and creatives who are leading conversations around the film and television industry. How to apply

Applying to Regent's is quick and easy. We accept direct applications year-round and there's no application fee. If you haven't received your exam results, you can still apply and we'll issue you with a conditional offer. You just need be clear in your application which qualifications you're currently studying for.

Step 1: Apply

During the application process, you'll have the chance to upload supporting documents, including:

  • A copy of your passport (photograph ID page)
  • Academic transcripts and certificates from all previous studies
  • A 500-700 word personal statement (view guidance)
  • If you're not a native English speaker, proof of your English proficiency

Credit transfer

If you’ve already studied part of your degree elsewhere, you may be able to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and join your new course at an advanced entry point. To apply for RPL, you'll need to state this clearly in your application and provide us with the certificates, transcripts and module descriptions for your previous course.

Step 2: Receive a response

You can expect to receive a decision on your application within 10 working days. We'll assess whether you meet our entry requirements and will notify you of our decision via email. UCAS applicants will also receive official notification via the UCAS system.

For some of our courses, the selection process may include an interview or audition. They can take the form of a one-to-one interview, a group interview or a portfolio review, which may be conducted by telephone or online. Arrangements of these are made between you and the Admissions department.

Step 3: Accept your offer

If you wish to accept your offer, you must pay your (non-refundable) advance tuition fee deposit. This will confirm your place. Here's how.

Step 4: Register 

Closer to the start of term, our Admissions team will send instructions regarding your registration process. This will include information on completing your online enrolment before you arrive, as well as a checklist of documents you'll need to bring with you to campus.

When do I need to pay?

If you receive an offer for a course, you’ll receive a pro forma invoice. To accept your offer and secure your place, pay your deposit payment as soon as possible.

The remaining portion of your first year’s tuition fees will be due when you enrol. At this time, you’ll receive your invoice for the full year. You can choose to pay for the year in full before the start of your first academic year or in two instalments, spread out across the academic year. The dates of these instalments will be determined by when your course starts.

What do fees include?

Fees cover the cost of all tuition and access to the University’s IT infrastructure and library learning resources. Fees are presented for the first level of study which equates to two terms. 

What other costs should I budget for?

You will need to budget additional funds for accommodation and living expenses, travel, and any additional trips, visits, activities or courses that you choose to participate in outside of the tuition offered as part of your course.

The library holds a limited number of copies of core textbooks and where possible in e-format. You will be encouraged to purchase your own textbooks and will need to budget approximately £80-£100 per year, depending on your course.

How you'll learn

You'll be taught by film directors, editors, writers and production specialists who have extensive global experience. Our staff have won Oscar nominations, collaborated on international feature films and award-winning documentaries, had work screened at the Superbowl and the British Film Institute (BFI). Their knowledge and experience ensure classes are always shaped by the latest technologies and trends. You’ll also:

  • Be allocated a personal tutor, who you’ll meet with regularly on a one-to-one basis 

Independent learning

Throughout your time at Regent’s, you'll be expected to undertake extra reading, research, revision and reflection – working alone and collaboratively with classmates.

We're interested in your potential, as well as your prior achievements – and we review each application comprehensively on its own merit. You'll need one of the following qualifications:

  • Minimum second class UK undergraduate degree
  • Equivalent international qualifications, as deemed acceptable by Admissions & UK ENIC

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning

We also welcome applications from students who don't meet our usual entry requirements. To be accepted for exceptional entry, you must:

  • Have three years of work experience if you don't hold a degree

Graduate visa

After you've completed your course, you may be eligible to apply for a Graduate visa. This enables you to work or look for work in the UK for up to two years after you leave Regent's, without the pressure of having to secure a job immediately.

Full-time

You can choose to start in either September or January. No matter which you choose, you’ll complete three terms. For September starters, these are autumn, spring and summer, lasting 12 months. January starters take a break over the summer and complete an additional autumn term. Therefore, this lasts slightly longer: 16 months.

MA Film Production and Marketing – full time

Term 1

Module title
Genre Film Work in groups to realise a short genre film, taking on specific roles in order to bring scripts to the screen. By working together, you'll gain valuable insights into the working practices of your peers, appreciate the possibilities and restrictions of interpreting the written word for the screen, and develop insights into the importance of collaboration in bringing a creative project to the market.
Development and Pitching Guide a short film concept through the processes of development and refinement into an engaging pitch ready for selection. Centred on a residential trip to an internationally recognised film festival, this process will culminate in a pitch presentation, where you'll aim to get your project selected and ‘greenlit.’ Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to create a crowdfunding campaign to build an audience and secure funding. Throughout the module, you'll enhance your skills in idea development, communication, branding, marketing and delivering an effective pitch. You'll also gain a deeper understanding of the professional standards required for story development and the packaging of short films for the film industry market.
Masters Perspectives This module will develop your advanced academic skills as you grow as an independent thinker and researcher. Through the distinct lens of your subject field, you will explore advanced critical thinking and analytical skills, and develop your ability to communicate complex ideas, develop research questions and plan to reach ambitious objectives with maximum impact and clarity.

Term 2

Major Project Part 1 – Major Film Principal Photography Take on a core role in the production of a short film and a secondary role on another live creative project. You'll gain experience and insights into how a professional crew operates and the differences between primary and secondary roles. Primary creative filmmaker roles may include Director, DOP, Sound Recording, Art Director, Camera Operator and Gaffa. Primary producing and marketing roles may include Producer and Production Manager. Secondary creative filmmaker roles may include 1st or 2nd C, Boom Operation, Spark and Grip. Secondary producing and marketing roles may include 1st Ad and Script Supervisor.
Pre-Production for the Major Film Develop a comprehensive understanding of the processes that shape a film before the cameras start rolling. Working from the project developed in the previous term, you'll learn how to create detailed preproduction documents from shot lists, storyboards and production schedules, while coordinating between departments to ensure smooth execution. You'll explore the intricacies of budgeting, location scouting, casting and legal requirements – and gain insights into the creative and logistical challenges of working with directors, producers and other key collaborators. Additionally, you'll analyse the role of preproduction in shaping the final product and how effective planning can prevent costly delays during shooting. By the end of the module, you'll have a robust set of skills that will prepare you to contribute to any film project during the critical pre-production phase.

Major Project Part 2 – Post-production Specialism Major Film Focus on one area of post-production and work in that specialism in the completion of your major project. You'll gain experience and insights into how a professional production is managed through the post-production pipeline, planning and executing any required reshoots and pickups. You'll learn and demonstrate your understanding of deliverables and crafting a narrative with specialist knowledge in a particular post-production field, such as: Editor, Edit Assistant, Colour Grading, Sound Design, titles and digital FXs.
Marketing and Distribution Develop a comprehensive marketing strategy for your short film, including crafting a festival plan and a complementary distribution strategy to ensure your film reaches its intended audience. You'll research, evaluate and position your work within the professional standards of the film industry. Through this process, you'll learn how to brand your film, build valuable industry connections and market it effectively. Ultimately, you'll create a festival release strategy, gaining a solid understanding of industry requirements and how to navigate them. Alongside this, you'll explore alternative distribution models and develop a tailored release strategy for your film. This module will help you enhance your skills in marketing, communication and the art of "selling" your film, while deepening your understanding of film festivals and the distribution landscape for short films.
Professional Perspectives This module will help you to define and develop your professional identity and build career objectives.
