Overview

Become a leader and strategist at the cutting-edge of user experience (UX) design – identifying customer needs and combining creativity, behavioural analysis and digital technology to create smart solutions and exceptional consumer experiences. 

UX design is a growing trend across all industries (from luxury brands to healthcare, travel and financial services) where user-centred design is key to a holistic brand experience. You’ll learn to harness business intelligence, consumer psychology and innovative design thinking to produce exceptional user experiences that solve real human problems. 

Working with others in creative labs and practical workshops, you’ll become confident
in planning, strategising and leading projects that deliver high-value user experiences – developing industry skills including ethnography, journey mapping, wireframing and storyboarding while building a portfolio of your own UX projects and ideas: across start-ups, corporates, NGOs and social enterprises.

In your final term, you’ll carry out a substantial research project related to your own UX interests and career goals – developing a pioneering user experience for a brand of your choice and delivering a pitch to a panel of industry experts.

You'll graduate with the practical skills to work as a UX design strategist, researcher, designer, digital marketer, UI developer, usability designer and more – able to visualise the bigger picture, build complex strategies, manage multiple projects and lead international teams.

How to apply

Applying to Regent's is quick and easy. We accept direct applications year-round and there's no application fee. If you haven't received your exam results, you can still apply and we'll issue you with a conditional offer. You just need be clear in your application which qualifications you're currently studying for.

Step 1: Apply

During the application process, you'll have the chance to upload supporting documents, including:

  • A copy of your passport (photograph ID page)
  • Academic transcripts and certificates from all previous studies
  • A 500-700 word personal statement (view guidance)
  • If you're not a native English speaker, proof of your English proficiency

Credit transfer

If you’ve already studied part of your degree elsewhere, you may be able to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and join your new course at an advanced entry point. To apply for RPL, you'll need to state this clearly in your application and provide us with the certificates, transcripts and module descriptions for your previous course.

Step 2: Receive a response

You can expect to receive a decision on your application within 10 working days. We'll assess whether you meet our entry requirements and will notify you of our decision via email. UCAS applicants will also receive official notification via the UCAS system.

For some of our courses, the selection process may include an interview or audition. They can take the form of a one-to-one interview, a group interview or a portfolio review, which may be conducted by telephone or online. Arrangements of these are made between you and the Admissions department.

Step 3: Accept your offer

If you wish to accept your offer, you must pay your (non-refundable) advance tuition fee deposit. This will confirm your place. Here's how.

Step 4: Register 

Closer to the start of term, our Admissions team will send instructions regarding your registration process. This will include information on completing your online enrolment before you arrive, as well as a checklist of documents you'll need to bring with you to campus.

What does a User Experience Designer do?

User Experience Designer is a term that covers different roles within the UXD industry. UX Design roles fall into three main categories, Researchers, Creators and Strategists. We are preparing our students to be strategists. A UXD strategist may work as a leader, creating the strategy and managing teams through a project to create great user experiences. They may also work on the production of Information Architecture, seeing the 'big picture' of a project and visualising and mapping out the user experience. 

Is a Masters in User Experience (UX) Design worth it?

Yes, if you want to get into User Experience Design from a related field or if you work in User Experience Design and want to move into a higher role, or if you want to expand your understanding of the different elements of User Experience Design that we teach on the course – user research, branding, leadership and management, the design process, project management, cutting-edge technology - the MSc in User Experience Design is definitely worth it.

Is User Experience (UX) Design the right career for you?

It  combines psychology, market research, technology, design, branding and business. How much does a User Experience (UX) Designer make?

Salaries in User Experience Design are generally high within the context of the creative industries. UX researchers, designers and strategists can earn very good salaries. In addition, the area is growing with more and more opportunities emerging for UX Designers . As more organisations realise the importance of a great User Experience, UX designers are becoming more crucial than ever. 

Fees

Tuition fee: 

  • £26,000 for the intake starting in September 2024
  • £27,000 for the intake starting in September 2025

If you receive an offer for a course, you’ll receive a pro forma invoice. To accept your offer and secure your place, pay your deposit payment as soon as possible.

The remaining portion of your first year’s tuition fees will be due when you enrol. At this time, you’ll receive your invoice for the full year. You can choose to pay for the year in full before the start of your first academic year or in two instalments, spread out across the academic year. The dates of these instalments will be determined by when your course starts.

What do fees include?

Fees cover the cost of all tuition and access to the University’s IT infrastructure and library learning resources. Fees are presented for the first level of study which equates to two terms. 

What other costs should I budget for?

You will need to budget additional funds for accommodation and living expenses, travel, and any additional trips, visits, activities or courses that you choose to participate in outside of the tuition offered as part of your course.

The library holds a limited number of copies of core textbooks and where possible in e-format. You will be encouraged to purchase your own textbooks and will need to budget approximately £80-£100 per year, depending on your course.

You’ll pair deep industry knowledge with hands-on experiences, taking part in a blend of learning formats to give your studies context:

Based in London, you'll also have opportunities to meet employers through guest lectures, live briefs, field trips and industry visits – giving you insights into the world of UX design and enabling you to put theory into practice.

Content hours – 12 hours per week, totalling 396 hours for the duration of the course.

Teaching staff 

You'll be taught by experts in creative UX design, brand experience, digital marketing, psychology and management whose extensive knowledge and experience ensure your classes are shaped by the most current insights, theories and practices.

You'll also be allocated a personal tutor, who'll meet you on a one-to-one basis at various stages throughout the year to provide you with guidance and advice to support your personal and professional development.

Plus, you'll benefit from regular guest speakers: networking and developing relationships with entrepreneurs, business owners, UX designers and more.

Independent learning

Throughout the course, you'll be expected to undertake extra reading, research, revision and reflection, as well as preparing work for workshops, and working collaboratively with other students in preparation for assessment.

We're interested in your potential, as well as your prior achievements – and we review each application comprehensively on its own merit. You'll need one of the following qualifications:

  • Minimum second class UK undergraduate degree
  • Equivalent international qualifications, as deemed acceptable by Admissions & UK ENIC

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning

We also welcome applications from students who don't meet our usual entry requirements. To be accepted for exceptional entry, you must:

  • Have three years of work experience if you don't hold a degree
  • Have one year of work experience if you hold a degree lower than a 2:2

You'll need to provide us with:

  • A headed employment letter detailing your position and length of service
  • A headed reference letter
  • A personal statement outlining your experience and ambitions

This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, by academic referral only.

MA User Experience Design

Term 1

Module Title
Exploring and Visualising Data Organisations are increasingly driven by a need to gather, visualise, and monetise digital information. This module provides you with a solid grounding in a selection of industry standard tools used in the exploration and visualisation of data in all forms. The module is applied with an expectation that you acquire practical industry-aligned skills. You will become proficient in ethically obtaining, preparing, and visualising data from various sources. You will learn techniques to develop and maximise analytical and visual impact.
UX Design Lab On this module you will explore the fundamentals of UX Design, examining the latest thinking around designing meaningful experiences that forge strong connections between brands and consumers. You’ll learn to identify user needs, develop customer personas, and turn your insights into impactful user experiences. Exploring foundations in HCI, brand experience, and consumer behaviour, you will apply your research to maximise brand touchpoint experiences. You also learn methods in defining information architecture, wireframing, storyboarding, creating user flows, prototyping and user testing. This fast-paced module, reflects the UXD industry. Working on a live project, you will learn in a dynamic Lab environment from industry specialists, echoing the vibrant ecosystem of UX Design.
Web Marketing and Analytics User-centred approaches are key to creating compelling digital interactions between consumers and brands. This module will introduce you to the fundamentals of good website design, give you an understanding of the role that an organisation’s website can play in its digital marketing strategy, and help you understand the range of analytics options available for measuring the effectiveness of web marketing. The first part of the module will concentrate on the principles of designing and building a website along with creating and organising content. In the second part of the module you’ll learn how to use analytics to improve the user experience through analysis of clickstream data, lead generation and branding metrics, keyword analysis, bounce rate, average revenue per user.

Term 2

Module Title
Leadership, Engagement and Motivation Leadership is a key competency for the next generation of business leaders and strategists. In this module you’ll explore interactions between leaders and followers, examining group dynamics and ways in which assigned and emergent leaders influence followers in various contexts. You’ll examine a range of central theoretical and practical issues, including the nature of group identity, the basis of authority and legitimacy, the dynamics of justice and fairness, the determinants of followership and charisma, and the practice and politics of leaders. You’ll explore the crucial role of the leader in creating and maintaining organisations where employees will want to contribute, and you’ll also learn how positive psychology, such as strengths, flow, and psychological capital can be applied to the everyday challenges of leading a dynamic and adaptive work force.
The Psychology of Consumer Behaviour The module aims to introduce you to the application of psychological methods, principles and theories to the understanding of consumer behaviour: why people buy and consume what they do and what informs these choices. The module will consider a variety of motivational and possible causal factors, including personality, social influence, neurobiology, and sensory and perceptual properties.
UX Strategy and Leadership Lab On this module you will learn how to lead a UX Design project, creating vision and strategy to deliver pioneering products and services, designed to optimise the relationship between a brand and its consumers. Using cutting-edge methods and technologies you will develop a big picture approach for fast-paced environments. You will project manage a live project and present a business model and proposal for UX Design experiences to a panel of experts, demonstrating your acquisition of excellent leadership, communication and partnership skills. Your course team will be joined by industry experts who contribute to short intensive blocks of learning. A fast-paced module, it reflects the UXD industry.

Term 3

Module Title
UX Design: Major Project The UX Design Major Project allows you to carry out a substantial research-informed project related to your UX interests and your aspirations. Working with industry, individually or with other students, you will lead a project that develops and delivers a pioneering User Experience for a given brand. Consolidating your learning on the course, you will demonstrate your ability to lead the development of insightful Brand Experiences. The module will culminate in the presentation of your Major Project and your Portfolio to industry experts. While your course leader will lead the module, other industry experts will contribute to your learning in this fast-paced module that reflects the UXD industry and prepares you for graduation and entry into industry.
