The new Graphic & Digital Design programme is designed with input from industry professionals. You'll gain a solid foundation in creative visual arts and the practical design skills that employers value, including user experience (UX) and digital media skills.

You will be encouraged to explore your own ideas and interests with an exciting range of elective modules, including photography, social media and fashion communication.

A distinctive feature of this programme is the opportunity to learn a foreign language, preparing you for a career in the increasingly international design industry.

In your second year, you will have the chance to take an industry placement module, be mentored by an industry expert, and throughout the programme you'll benefit from contact with Regent's wide network of alumni and industry advisors.

Length

This is a three-year programme, or four years if you begin on the Integrated Design Foundation. Each academic year is split into two 12-week terms.

Year 1 (Core modules)

Module Title Overview
Design Thinking and Media This module introduces you to the fundamental principles and practices used in Graphic and Digital Design, including: design research skills, basic visual literacy skills, the Design Process, (creative research, idea generation and development, visualisation/communication, realisation, and evaluation) and teamwork. You will start to apply these principles as you devise your own solutions to visual communication briefs set by your tutor that engage you with current debates and issues.
Designing User Experience You will develop an understanding of the graphic designer’s part to play in engineering the most effective experience for a proposed product, device, interface, place or event. The module aims to develop knowledge, understanding, and skills within the newly formalised, design-related practice of user experience (UX) as it pertains to both the freelance and in-house graphic designer.
Research and Context This module aims to develop your ability to research into a topic relevant to graphic design practice, apply your research to support a perspective or point of view, and to communicate your findings clearly in visual and written format. You will also be familiarised with the evolution of contemporary graphic design and how historical context and key theories have influenced its development.
Type and Image You will continue to build your knowledge and understanding of the interrelationship, principles, and processes of typography and the use of text and image, while starting to develop your knowledge of contemporary graphic design. To achieve these aims you will learn about key landmarks in the development of contemporary typography and experiment with text and image in exploratory exercises and briefs.

Year 1 (Elective modules)

Module Title Overview
CAD In this module you will learn how to use creative software to generate and manipulate digital images for the fashion industry. You will explore how fashion uses visual communication and image to promote products and be shown how to develop professional techniques to articulate your own ideas through this medium.
Digital Photography This module covers the basic concepts and practice of digital photography, including understanding and use of the camera, lenses, and other basic photographic equipment. The module will address aesthetic principles as they relate to composition, space, exposure, light and colour. Technological requirements of digital formats will be discussed, such as formats and resolution. You will learn basic digital manipulation of images in preparation for creating a photo portfolio of images. You will produce photographs in response to seminars looking at the work of notable photographers, and give an oral presentation about the work of a photographer of your choice.
Regent's Connect (language elective) Regent’s Connect is a portfolio of language, cultural and cross-cultural elective modules available to the student community at Regent’s University London. Connect Modules are designed to broaden your education, enhance your CV and give you those extra attributes employers are often looking for. You will gain valuable life skills such as the ability to communicate across cultural and linguistic boundaries, you will develop resilience and self-awareness.

In an increasingly interconnected world, knowledge of a foreign language can facilitate transactions and provide skills which are crucial for success in a multicultural environment. Cultural sensitivity and intelligence will enable you to have more rewarding social interaction with people who have a different identity from your own and increase your global career prospects.
Understanding Social Media This module introduces you to social media through its history and development, focusing on current thinking about social media. Leading research informs critical examination of the role of social media in contemporary societies, interpersonal relations, culture, politics and technology. This module focuses on dominant social media platforms (such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Wikis, Apps etc.) and bridges contemporary theory with practice through applied exercises exploring the purpose and functions of each of these platforms. This module aims to equip you to critically understand the role of social media within society and within the social media landscape.

Year 2 (Core modules)

Module Title Overview
Narrative & Sequence This module builds on introductory skills, both technical and conceptual, and develops your understanding of sequential design and narrative in visual communication. It aims to increase your autonomy and ability in the production of exciting and original design. You will also develop your team-working skills, and deepen your engagement with your learning as you participate in assessing your peers in a group project.
Design in Context This module aims to increase your knowledge and understanding of the importance of context and audience in design, while allowing you to apply and develop your knowledge and creative skills within your chosen area, through a selection of visual communication briefs, in part self-initiated. You will be encouraged to enter external competitions and opportunities to pitch your skills and imagination against your peers, for example in competitions like the RSA Student Design Awards which challenge emerging designers to tackle pressing social, environmental and economic issues through design thinking.
Graphic Design Theory in Context This module develops your knowledge and understanding of some of the main theoretical issues, key to the context of graphic design practice. You will be asked to research and consider social, economic, political and cultural perspectives within these debates. You will work within a group on a chosen research project that will result in a presentation of your findings to your peers.
Creative & Professional Development This module provides you with the opportunity to prepare for the final self-managed classes Dissertation or Research Report, Major Project and Final Portfolio, by requiring you to research, develop and realise, with support from your tutor and peers, a self-promotional design project. You will also develop your entrepreneurial skills and an understanding of the career structure, job responsibilities, and employment opportunities (including how to establish a freelance practice) within the working field. You will reflect on your strengths and weaknesses, your progress achieved and your ambitions for the future, in a self-reflective review paper.
Graphic Design Research in Context This module provides the analytical tools for the investigation of your practice discipline from a social/economic/political and cultural perspective. These tools will support depth and relevance to your final year work. You will deepen your knowledge of research and analysis methods as you apply your learning in a research project into a topic relevant to the module and your design area. The brief for this project will be developed by you, with support from your tutor, and will result in a 3,500 word research paper.

Year 2 (Elective modules)

Design Solutions (Change the World) This module aims to challenge you to develop your imagination, creativity and invention through applying your skills to design briefs that address real-world problems. Researching and engaging with business, social and/or environmental issues you will undertake ambitious design projects, competitions, or live briefs while negotiating real-world complexities, constraints and deadlines.
Professional Placement The Professional Placement module will give you the opportunity to experience what it is like to work in your chosen industry, while developing your employability and increasing your graduate career prospects. It will provide you with a deeper understanding of your subject and allow you to acquire greater knowledge of the industry. It will enable you to explore and experience its practices, develop your intellectual and practical knowledge and skills directly in relation to the industry, apply some of what you have learned on your programme and reflect upon your career aspirations.
Experimental Fashion Image The aim of this module is to deepen your technical and creative skills, with focus on experimenting with and exploring technologies, both current and emerging, still and moving, to allow you to visualise and communicate new perspectives on the fashion image, and allow you to develop confidence and originality in visual communication. One aim therefore is to re-inforce existing knowledge and skill relevant to the fashion image, and another to extend and broaden the application of these skills with imagination and originality. To achieve the aim of originality and innovation, the research and development aspect of this module is emphasised as you are encouraged to experiment and imagine, towards creative exciting outcomes.
Digital Media Lab The aim of this module is to allow you to learn and speculate about the potential of inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary, emerging and current design technologies. The module aims to develop your knowledge and skills in interactive digital design, as well as in an area of your own choice within graphic and digital design, extending your technical and creative skills to underpin your confidence in creating high quality outcomes in your final year projects.
Digital Media Development Lab The aim of this module is to deepen your technical and creative skills that will underpin your work in the challenging final year. You will start the module by reviewing your skills and attributes demonstrated in your work to date – identifying areas of strength and weakness and from this position you will research and develop a brief in collaboration with your tutor, that targets and deepens the identified skills and areas of knowledge that you wish to develop.

Year 3 (Core modules)

Module Title Overview
Major Project – Development This final year module provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills attained throughout the degree and to prepare you for the level of complexity and self-management involved in professional graphic design. To achieve this you will undertake and negotiate a sustained period of study, researching and developing an ambitious, largely self-initiated and managed project focused within your chosen area within graphic design. You will also develop the essential skills in communication and presentation of design ideas to an audience.
Major Project – Realisation In this module, you will revise, plan and complete the design project you proposed at the end of the module Major Project – Development. You will also demonstrate your skills in communication and presentation of design ideas, and to this end you will, on the last week of term, communicate the design process of the whole project from research to realisation, in a formal presentation.
Final Portfolio This module allows you to develop and demonstrate skills that indicate your readiness to enter the professional world not only in the design work itself, but also in its communication and to this end you will be asked to design a ‘portfolio’ of work that holds and communicates the projects. This may be in the form of a website, physical portfolio pdf or other, but should be designed to communicate your range of projects within a coherent, engaging structure relevant to your audience(s).
Curation and Connection (Refection and Self-Promotion) This module allows you to take stock of all you have learnt in your degree path, to reflect on what you have achieved; to extend your team-working skills as you communicate your work to an audience of your peers and outside industry professionals; and to plot a path that will help you succeed in the future. You will co-curate a final year exhibition, and be part of the team that delivers this to the public, with accompanying publicity events, materials, social media campaign etc. You will also develop self-promotional materials (CV, online blog/website, personal statement, showcase design work etc.) and edit, improve and publicise this material on a range of relevant platforms in a coherent strategy.

Year 3 (Elective modules)

In addition you will need to choose one elective module from the list below.

Module Title Overview
Dissertation In this module, you will research the contextual background (or a connected issue) to your Major Project creative design brief. You will explore and clearly define a subject or area of theoretical interest of your choice that supports your Major Project, negotiated with your tutor who will guide your selection. The subject will be related to design and communication, and may be something you have touched upon earlier in your studies that you want to explore in depth. You will choose a topic, gather and evaluate research and set the parameters of your enquiry, enabling you to structure and write the dissertation successfully. You will then complete a 6,000-word dissertation that examines your subject critically and builds an argument or perspective on your topic supported by references and research.
Research Report The aim of this module is to complete a piece of work that not only supports, through its depth of reference and analysis, the design work in Major Project module, but communicates the argument or narrative of the research in a more visual way than the Dissertation option. You will develop and submit a written text for this module, at 4,000 words. In this module, non-verbal elements for example images, layout, pace etc. play a key role and will affect the success of the communication of your research.

Step 1 Apply

You can apply in the following ways:

If you have not uploaded the relevant supporting documents during the online application process, you should ensure that we have the below supporting documents as soon as you have completed your application. These can be sent to the Regent’s Admissions Department via email to [email protected].

  • Copies of academic transcripts and certificates from all previous studies (i.e. secondary school and/or university certificates)
  • One academic letter of recommendation
  • A 300-500 word personal statement outlining the reasons for applying to your chosen programme, how you feel you will benefit from the programme of study, what contributions you will make to the University and how this will help your future career aspirations.
  • A copy of your passport photograph (ID) page
  • If you are not a native English speaker, proof of your English proficiency

Credit Transfer

  • If you’ve already studied part of a degree course elsewhere, you may be able apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and join the programme at an advanced entry point. If you’d like to request entry part-way through a programme, make sure you state this clearly in your statement of purpose and provide us with the transcripts and module descriptions for the relevant study.

Step 2 Receive a response to your application

You can expect to receive a decision on your application within 10 working days of receipt of your completed application and supporting documents.

We will assess whether you meet our entry requirements and will notify you of the decision via email. UCAS applicants will also receive official notification via the UCAS system.

For some of our programmes, the selection process may include an interview or audition. Interviews/auditions can take the form of a one-to-one interview, group interview or portfolio review which may be conducted by telephone or as a Skype call. Arrangements of these are made between the Admissions Department and the applicant.

Step 3 Accepting your offer

If you wish to accept the offer you must pay the advance tuition fee deposit (non-refundable) to confirm your place.

Closer to the start of the term, the Admissions Team will send information regarding the registration process. This will include information on completing your online enrolment prior to your arrival as well as a checklist of documents you will need to bring with you to fully register onto the programme.

What do fees include?

Fees cover the cost of all tuition and access to the University’s IT infrastructure and library learning resources. Fees are presented for the first level of study which equates to two terms.

What other costs should I budget for?

You will need to budget additional funds for accommodation and living expenses, travel, and any additional trips, visits, activities or courses (such as Summer programmes) that you choose to participate in outside of the tuition offered as part of the programme. You will also need to budget for materials that you will use for garment construction during the programme.

The library holds a limited number of copies of core text books and where possible in e-format. You will be encouraged to purchase your own text books and will need to budget approximately £80-£100 per year, depending on your programme of study.

When are fees paid?

Fees are payable in the following instalments:

  • An initial non-refundable advance deposit paid when you accept your offer of a place
  • The advance deposit is allocated against the first term’s fees
  • Tuition fees (including fees for subsequent terms) are due two weeks in advance of classes commencing

Calculating annual fee increases

  • The University sets tuition fees on an annual basis in line with the University's financial year which runs from 1 August to 31 July
  • The fees quoted here are for one academic year of study
  • Fees for subsequent years of study are subject to fee inflation
  • The University aims to keep annual fee increases in line with the University’s cost inflation. The expectation is that this will be no greater than UK consumer price inflation (CPI) plus 3%. There are occasionally variations to this dictated by the costs of running specific programmes or facilities required for our programmes
  • As a registered charity, all fee increases are subject to approval of the Trustee Board thus ensuring that affordability for our students remains a primary concern in any decisions regarding fee increases

Teaching and Assessment

Most of your learning will take place in the studio, where you will work on hands-on projects. These cover a range of real-life challenges from industry, and help to prepare you for a career in the fast-paced world of digital design. You will be assessed on your project work.

You will also have the chance to learn and research into the theory, history and context that has changed the discipline of graphic design over time.

There are also opportunities to learn through workshops, study trips and competitions.

Contact hours and expected workload

You will have 15-18 hours contact hours per week during term time and are expected to spend about twice that each week working independently on your projects.

Teaching staff

Throughout your degree programme you will be taught by experienced academics and industry professionals.

Methods of assessment

The programme draws on a wide range of assessment types to both reflect the nature of the industry and to give different types of learner adequate opportunity to successfully demonstrate achievement on the programme. The assessment types are:

  • Design Project Outcomes: This refers to the final outcomes from design briefs and projects, and can be presented physically (for example in a book or model), digitally (for example in a website or app design), as a video, or both physically and digitally (for example a physical portfolio and its copy in a blog or digital file).
  • Research and development work: This material, in digital and analogue forms, shows evidence of your design process, and is usually collected in blogs, digital files or sketchbooks and folders, but may also include tests and experiments, models and trial-versions of the final design.
  • Written work: Self-reflective essays, reports and research papers are all examples of written work that may be assessed within the modules. Closely linked and relevant to your practical studies, these written assessments are designed to increase your depth of understanding of the subject as you progress through your degree.
  • Alternative assessments: Alternative assessments are provided, where possible, for those with a registered disability. Please contact the Disability Coordinator for more details.

Academic requirements

A Regent’s education provides you with a high level of personal attention, and this begins from the moment you apply to study with us. We want to understand who you are and what your skills and interests may be – we are interested in your potential, as well as your prior achievements. We review each application comprehensively and on its individual merit, considering all of your skills, interests and attributes.

If you are holding A levels, we would typically make you an offer at two A-Levels at Grades A-C.

We will also assess your application for proficiency in Mathematics, asking for a GCSE in this subject at grade A-C / 9-4 (or the international equivalent).

We receive applications each year from over 170 countries and are happy to assess all international qualifications. For example, if you are studying the International Baccalaureate, we would make an offer based on your successful completion of the IB Diploma; if you are studying an American High School Diploma, we would make an offer based on a minimum GPA of 2.8 plus two APs at grades 3,3.

Portfolio review

After the submission of your application you will be asked to present your design work.

We are looking for a body of work that demonstrates your research skills, creative thinking and idea generation, experimentation, mark-making and sketchbooks, image-making, drawing and observation skills. Please also show finished pieces of work that you are proud of.

We would also like to see experimentation with typography and letterforms that demonstrate your understanding of typography as a fundamental creative communication tool.

We are looking for candidates with enthusiasm for all things visual. Your portfolio should demonstrate that you have an aptitude for creativity through your previous studies.

English Language requirements

English is our language of instruction and we require proof of your English proficiency. 

You can demonstrate your English proficiency with:

  • IELTS: Overall score of 6.0 with no score below 5.5 in any of the four components
  • PTE Academic: Overall score of 58, with 51 or above in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT: Overall score 80. (We do not accept TOEFL from applicants requiring a Tier 4 visa, as this qualification is no longer accepted by the UK Visas and Immigration Department (UKVI)
  • A-level/GCSE/IGCSE English: Grade C / 4 or above (for IGCSE certificates, please provide the Supplementary Certifying Statement with the breakdown of component grades)
  • International Baccalaureate: Grade 4 or above in English at Higher or Standard Level

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

As a Regent’s student you will take an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) module in your first semester in order to support the development of your academic work in English.

Please note that students who achieve an IELTS 6.5, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component, or an equivalent result, are exempt from taking the EAP module and have an additional academic module.

Students entering with Recognition of Prior Learning

If you are joining your programme at an advanced entry point, we require IELTS 6.5 with a minimum 6.0 in Reading and Writing, with no score below 5.5 in any other components.
