Trading and Hedge Funds

Trading is a vital function in the global financial markets. To succeed, traders must not only have a good grasp of global economic fundamentals but must also understand technical indicators and market behaviour. This module will give you practical exposure to the art and science of trading through the creation of your own trading strategy for potential investors. You will examine the main tools traders use to make decisions in the global financial markets, and learn how to consider the behavioural aspects of the market as well as economic and political factors.

Bond Markets and Credit Derivatives 

This module explores the theory and practice of credit derivatives. It offers a framework knowledge of derivatives with special reference to fixed-income assets, such as bonds and related products. It will enable you to solve complex problems in a financial and business context and to use appropriate financial techniques in order to make decisions from various options.

Oil and Gas Markets 

This module provides a framework and a basic grounding for understanding the issues and problems not only in the industry itself but also in the geopolitics and geo-economics of energy. You will look at the major actors, the historical and future development of the industry, and the nature of supply and demand. You will also cover technological developments and the hunt for new reserves, issues in transportation and distribution, and geopolitics and the use of gas and oil as political tools.

Strategy and Decision-Making 

This module gives you an insight into a complex and often contradictory subject area where the perspectives are as diverse as there are writers on the subject. You will develop awareness of the significance of the dynamic and ever-changing international business environments and the strategic challenges confronting organisations. You will learn about frameworks for analysing external macro and competitive dynamics and internal organisational environments, and the strategic decision-making techniques used to successfully formulate, evaluate, select (from options) and implement appropriate strategies.

Managing Complexity 

This module will develop your knowledge in managing complexity of contemporary management challenges and allow you to build your own personal perspectives within business and life essential skills. You will acquire the people skills to organise and deploy effective performance management strategies, manage strategic information and strengthen your communication skills to develop action-oriented solutions.

Emerging Economy Enterprise 

This module will enable you to develop conceptual understanding of the entrepreneurial opportunities offered by the emerging economies in the context of economic, political, legal, institutional and business issues where decision-making is taking place in complex and unpredictable situations. You will be able to use knowledge gained from other modules to recognise key global measuring indicators as essential tools of exploitation and management of opportunities.

Private Equity and Venture Capital

Venture capital and private equity can seem opaque, with complicated legal structures and a particularly alienating jargon. You will gain understanding of the way things work, why they are structured in a particular way and how to talk about them properly. The module focuses on the clarification and justification of the legal and business structure in private equity/venture capital. It also incorporates the additional layer
of complexity and contextual factors arising from the ‘hands-on’ financial aspects.

International Business and Economic Policy 

This module defines the international business framework within which MNEs are born and grow, as well as providing analytical tools for dissecting varying motivations for MNE behaviour. You will learn to identify ways in which companies seek to gain international competitive advantage and apply current research to interpretations of international business strategies.

Web Marketing and Analytics 

This module introduces the basics of good website design. It explores the role that an organisation’s website can play in its digital marketing strategy and the analytics tools available to measure the effectiveness of web marketing. You will learn the principles of designing and building a website, along with creating and organising appropriate content for each stage of the process. You will also learn how to improve the user experience through analysis of data. At the end of the module you will have the opportunity to take the Google Analytics Individual Qualification (GAIQ) test.
