University of Virginia

Based in the independent city of Charlottesville, Virginia (population 50,000), it’s about an hour’s drive from Richmond (the capital and largest city) and 2 hours from Washington DC. It is on the edge of Shenandoah National Park (200,000 acres of forest, trails and waterfalls) and the vast George Washington and Jefferson National Forest to the west, and the Atlantic is a little over an hour away to the east. It has an airport and is well connected by rail and road. The institution itself is in the heart of Charlottesville, and features many historic buildings dating back to the 1700s.

Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees. One of a select group of 62 American and Canadian universities chosen for membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization for pre-eminent research institutions.

Individual program specializations are accredited by such organizations as the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association, the National Athletic Training Association and the Council for Exceptional Children. The McIntire School of Commerce and the Colgate Darden Graduate School of Business Administration are accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.

The University of Virginia is one of only two public universities in the United States that has a Triple-A credit rating from all three major credit rating agencies.

The flagship university of Virginia state. UVA is well known for its historic foundations, student-run honor code (in which those accused of “lying, cheating or stealing” are tried before their peers, never faculty), and its secret societies. UNESCO designated UVA as America’s first and only collegiate World Heritage site in 1987 and its grounds are considered one of the most beautiful collegiate grounds in the country. Key alumni include the founders of Reddit and companies founded by UVA students generate more than $1.6 trillion in annual revenue (equivalent to the economy size of Canada).

The amounts below are the very minimum level of funding support on a monthly basis that we estimate is needed for J-1 scholars and their dependents (if applicable). These amounts only provide for the bare necessities and do not allow for any discretionary spending whatsoever. They also do not take into account any kind of emergency.
