What is UCAS Clearing?

UCAS Clearing is your opportunity to find and apply for university courses if you haven’t secured a place already, or if your circumstances have changed.

Every year Clearing helps thousands of students begin exciting new journeys in higher education – whether they’re applying for the first time, changing course, or joining later than expected.

Is clearing for you?

You can apply through Clearing if you:

  • Have applied to university through UCAS
  • Didn’t receive any offers
  • Didn’t meet the conditions of their offers
  • Has declined their offers
  • Is applying for university via UCAS after 30 June
  • Wants to change course or university in UCAS

UCAS Clearing 2025 key dates

Courses can fill up quickly. Applying early gives you the best chance of securing your place. Here are some important dates to keep in mind:

  • 5 July 2025: Clearing opens
  • 14 August 2025: A-level results day (high volume of Clearing activity)
  • 20 October 2025: Final date to apply through Clearing

How to Apply Through UCAS Clearing

Follow these simple steps to apply through Clearing:

  1. Check your status
    Log into UCAS Hub and see if you’re eligible for Clearing — if you are, your Clearing number will appear.
  2. Research available courses
    Search for vacancies on the UCAS website, university websites, or course finders.
  3. Contact universities
    Get in touch with universities directly — most will have a Clearing hotline or enquiry form. You’ll discuss your qualifications and interest in the course.
  4. Receive an informal offer
    If a university is happy to offer you a place, they will give you an informal offer (usually by phone or email).
  5. Add your Clearing choice in UCAS Hub
    Once you have an informal offer you want to accept, add it as your Clearing choice in UCAS Hub. The university will then confirm your place.

Tips for Success in Clearing

  • Be prepared — have your UCAS ID, Clearing number, qualifications and contact details ready.
  • Stay flexible with your course options — you might discover new subjects to explore.
  • Research universities and courses ahead of time.
  • Call as early as possible on Results Day — phone lines can get very busy.
  • Keep a notepad and pen handy to jot down details from your conversations.

What is UCAS Clearing?
Clearing is the process that allows students to apply for university courses if they don’t hold any offers or want to apply after 30 June.

What is self-release?
Self-release allows you to release yourself from your current firm choice on your UCAS Hub, so you can apply for a different course or university through Clearing.

What is Clearing Plus?
Clearing Plus is a tool on UCAS Hub that recommends courses you may be interested in, based on your original application.

What’s an informal offer?
An informal offer is when a university offers you a place in Clearing (usually by phone or email), before you formally add it to your UCAS Hub.

Can you use Clearing if you’ve already accepted an offer?
Yes, you can use self-release if you’ve already accepted an offer and want to apply elsewhere through Clearing.

How do you add a Clearing choice?
Once you have an informal offer, you should add that course as your Clearing choice in your UCAS Hub within 48 hours. This is how you confirm your place.

Can international students use Clearing?
Yes, international students can also apply for places through Clearing.

Will accommodation still be available during Clearing?
Accommodation could still be available, but places may be limited. Check with each university.

What if I haven’t applied through UCAS yet?
You can still apply through Clearing. You’ll first need to complete a UCAS application and then follow the Clearing process.
