4 top tips to prepare for university

With the start of term fast approaching, you’re probably feeling nervous or excited – or both – about your first week at university. Leaving home for the first time can be a nerve-wracking prospect, especially if this is your first experience of living abroad. But fear not: our top tips will help you stay prepared, and stress-free, for this new life chapter.

1. Do some solo travelling

Whether it’s camping in Costa Rica, or backpacking through Borneo, solo travelling is a great way to explore the world, while forcing you out of your comfort zone.

Immersing yourself in new cultures and ways of life, and meeting people you wouldn’t otherwise, is a great way to prepare for your university experience. Not only will you develop valuable life skills, such as problem-solving and cooking different cuisines, but it’s also a great confidence-builder, as you learn to navigate an unfamiliar environment on your own.

2. Pre-reading/library

Before starting your course, you will receive a reading list by email. Getting a headstart on it will give you a good idea of what to expect on your course, and build your knowledge of your subject area. Identify your core texts and buy them online/borrow them from your local library. It’s also a great way to get yourself into a daily reading routine.

3. Learn mindfulness

What do Oprah and Ariana Grande have in common? Aside from being amazingly successful female icons, both love nothing more than starting the day with mindfulness.

Mindfulness all about focusing your attention fully on the present moment – to your thoughts and feelings and surroundings – and can be achieved through various techniques, including meditation, deep breathing, mental imagery, and even running in your local park. From reducing stress, to improving focus and lowering blood pressure, mindfulness has been scientifically proven to boost mental and physical health.

4. Get outside your comfort zone

As a great person once said: “life begins at the end of your comfort zone”. University is all about stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things you wouldn’t usually do in your everyday life. And never is this more true than during Welcome Week!

Do one thing you’re afraid of this week. It could be joining a class, trying public speaking, stand-up paddle-boarding or an early morning 5K run! Notice how great you feel afterwards!
