Professional Biography
Laoura Englezou is a spatial designer, educator and academic leader, currently the Director of Programmes for Architecture and Interior Design at Regent’s University London. Previously, she was the Course Leader for the BA (Hons) Interior Design program, where she successfully led several revalidations, including the launch of a new curriculum in 2023 that was commended for its rigorous, forward-thinking design and alignment with the university’s strategic vision.
Laoura’s academic journey began with a BA in Arts & Design at Central Saint Martins, where she specialized in Spatial Design and earned First-Class Honours for her thesis, Nicosia Dead Zone, an urban strategy proposal utilising spatial narrative as a design methodology. Following her undergraduate studies, she completed an MA in Housing and Urbanism at the Architectural Association.
Her involvement in teaching started early on, having completed a Pg Certificate in Learning & Teaching in Art, Design & Communication enabling her to pursue a growing development in academia. For over 10 years, Laoura taught on the Level 4 Art & Design Foundation course at Central Saint Martins (UAL), where she was the Pathway leader in Architecture & Spatial Design. Additionally, she contributed to the postgraduate architecture program at the University of Westminster as a visiting tutor, field trip enabler and guest critic.
Laoura initially joined the Interior Design department at American InterContinental University as a visiting lecturer, where she taught on both foundation and undergraduate levels of the dual American and UK degree programme. Since joining Regent’s University London, along with leading the development of the BA (Hons) Interior Design course, her academic work primarily centres on teaching design studio modules across all levels. This has allowed for a wealth of opportunities to shape the design approach and the ethos of the ID course.
As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of Interior Educators, Laoura actively contributes to the advancement of pedagogical practices in design education. She has experience as a Link Tutor, where she has held a role for the Dual Award Master’s degrees at DOMUS Academy Milan, a collaborative partnership with Regent’s University London. Laoura is currently the External Examiner for the BA Environment Design program at Xiamen University, China, a partnership with the University for the Creative Arts. She is also the External Examiner for the BA Interior Design program at Metropolitan College, Greece, a partnership with University of East London.

Research Interests
Laoura has a particular interest in issues associated with urbanism, urban architecture, as well as theory on community, culture and identity in relation to the built environment. She has undertaken urban analysis and research projects in London, Nicosia, Berlin, Beirut, Barcelona, and Shanghai. Her design research on places of conflict, such as the divided city of Nicosia has been presented at the City Dialogue Symposium, organised by 'Dialogue among Civilizations' in Tehran.
Her philosophy is that interior and spatial design is about learning how to draw boundaries and create an atmosphere; it encompasses the design of place – inside, outside and virtual – the depiction of (future) spaces and the generation of radical strategies for inhabitation.
In her teaching practice, whether as Course Leader or Director, she continues her work with the local community and industry and developed the industry guest talk series alongside live projects that support her ‘Research by design partnerships’ approach. She is interested in how a client facing approach to projects fosters links with the local community and embeds an understanding of the cultural, social and economic implications of design early on in students’ educational journey.
