Terry Newman

Professional Biography

Terry Newman is a senior lecturer on the IFMA fashion marketing programme at Regents and is a Link tutor.  She has over 20 years’ teaching experience in higher education working on BA and MA dissertation supervisions, marketing, research methods, journalism, professional writing, styling, communications, digital content, fashion theory and history modules. 

She is also a best-selling author whose work spans fashion, music, and cultural history. Alongside titles such as Legendary Authors and the Clothes They Wore and Legendary Artists and the Clothes They Wore, she has written a series of music and fashion biographies, including books on Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Billie Eilish. She is also the author of Marilyn Style, created in collaboration with Marilyn Monroe’s estate. 

Other most recent books include Cool Mothers which explores motherhood, fashion and identity and The Genius of Rei Kawakubo, the Woman who Founded Comme des Garcons.  

Her wider work includes consulting on documentaries about Twiggy and Mary Quant, and contributions to i-D’s Fashion Now, Fashion Now 2, Soul i-D and a chapter about menswear for Gered Mankowitz's photography book, Rolling Stones, Rare and Unseen.  

Earlier in her career, Terry worked in the fashion industry throughout the 1990s as an editor at i-D, Attitude, and Self Service, and as a writer for The Guardian, The Independent, The Times, and The Sunday Times. She also wrote and presented fashion programmes for Channel 4, including She’s Gotta Have It and Slave.

Research Interests

Terry is interested in the character of fashion, what people wear and what it can tell us about lives led, popular culture, art, social dynamics, style histories and politics. 

Research Supervision

Terry is currently supervising FSM710 MA dissertations at Regents.

Teaching

Terry currently leads FSM705 and FSM710 modules for the International Fashion Marketing MA programme at Regent's.

For the last 14 years she has worked in a variety of university roles, including running the MA Fashion Journalism course at UCA for five years. Terry has led and taught marketing and branding modules, fashion history, magazine journalism, digital media, styling, and magazine publishing modules amongst others.

Previously, she lectured for 6 years at Birkbeck College, London University on their Creative and Professional Writing course.
