It blends art business, law and connoisseurship to foster the expertise and global perspective required to thrive in this fast-paced, ever-evolving sector.
A global approach to the art market
This distinctive course offers students an in-depth exploration of the art world’s most important sectors. From understanding the inner workings of galleries, auction houses and art fairs, to mastering the valuation, sale and promotion of art, they'll gain critical insights into the forces that drive the global art economy. The curriculum also explores essential topics including:
- Contemporary and historical art market trends
- High-performing collectables
- Art investment, valuation and risk assessment
- Cross-cultural perspectives on art patronage and collection
- Legal and ethical issues, including restitution and provenance
Students will develop a sophisticated understanding of the global art market's economic, legal and cultural dimensions, giving them the tools to influence its future.
Led by industry experts
Taught in the heart of London’s Regent’s Park, one of the world’s premier art capitals, the course will be delivered by industry leaders Giovanni Gasparini, Laura Uccello and Julia Weiner and will feature special access to museums, commercial galleries and art fairs such as Frieze and Frieze Masters. Students will meet industry leaders and benefit from seminars with influential art dealers, art advisors, curators and gallery directors – gaining unique insights and valuable networking opportunities.
‘Our new MA is designed to reflect the international scope and interconnectedness of today’s art market,’ said Course Leader, Giovanni Gasparini. ‘Students will leave with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to navigate this fascinating but complex global market.’
Hands-on learning in international art hubs
To deepen their global understanding, students will embark on two inclusive study trips to major international art market hubs in Europe and beyond. These immersive experiences will allow them to engage directly with key players and gain practical knowledge of how different markets operate.
Trips may include visits to prestigious events such as Art Basel in Switzerland, TEFAF in Maastricht and Biennales in Venice and Sydney – as well as emerging art museums in the Middle East, Asia and America.
Future-focused career preparation
Upon completion of the course, which also includes a term dedicated to a professional placement, graduates will be equipped to pursue successful careers across a broad range of roles in the art world. The course also prepares students to explore emerging challenges such as the growing importance of digital art, online sales, and the impact of blockchain on the art trade.
With Regent’s strong industry connections and central London location, students will have unmatched access to career opportunities in this dynamic field.
The MA Global Art Markets course will launch in September 2025 with just 15 student places available. Applications open from mid-October 2024.
