Fashion graduate Ka Wai (Basil) Lam has had part of his graduate collection, Melancholy for Lost Youth, published on Vogue Italia’s website.
The feature comes just one year after Basil graduated Regent’s BA (Hons) Fashion & Design course. It comes hot on the heels of his feature in Fashion Collective, a prominent industry website.
Basil says the photograph exceeded his expectations, and proved the power of collaboration in the fashion design industry.
‘Initially I was surprised to see my designs on Vogue Italia’s website as it’s such a prominent brand. But the feature has allowed me to see my designs in a completely different context to the one I imagined when I was designing them.
‘The photo that was taken goes far beyond anything I would have thought of alone. So often we’re told that, as a designer, we have to do everything ourselves – but really, what this Vogue photoshoot shows me is that the end product is a combination of everyone’s ideas, which come together to form a new light.’
Course Leader Steven Dell commented:
‘I am thrilled to see yet another of our talented graduates receiving such exciting press recognition. The beautiful photo shoot of Ka Wai Lam's graduate collection for the Vogue Italia website really captures his contemporary vision and strong menswear aesthetic.’
Basil also expressed the power of the household name in shaping his career potential.
‘Vogue is such a well-known brand, and being featured there gives me confidence. So often we undervalue our own work, which can be the push we need to do better, but it can be detrimental too. Seeing my work in Vogue makes me believe in myself and my work, and makes me confident that people understand what I do.’
