Experience what it's like to work in your chosen industry while developing your understanding and employability. The work you undertake will enable you to apply your knowledge and practical skills to real life challenges to develop a critical appreciation of how an organisation operates and evolves. You'll be required to complete a fixed period in industry (as agreed with the placement provider and/or employer) while keeping weekly contact with your module tutor.

Your example placement tasks could include:
- Market research (e.g., competitor positioning, customer profiling)
- Data modelling and data analytics
- Financial modelling and analysis
- Conducting risk analyses, reporting weak points or danger areas in projects, and identifying ways to reduce risk
- Assisting with business analysis, strategy, planning
- Engaging with customers to understand pains and alignments
- Preparing marketing materials, presentations and reports
- Shadowing business partners and team members, enabling you to gain exposure into the inner workings of a small business.
- Assisting with administrative tasks (e,g., budgets and invoicing)
Fashion
Opportunities available in: Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing/PR
Your example placement tasks could include:
- Assisting design development team members
- Copying and drafting basic patterns
- Preparing and finishing basic samples
- Sourcing and purchasing materials
- Styling models
- Handling showroom appointments with editors and stylists
- Pitching clients to print and digital press
- Event planning and execution (such as coordinating casting calls, shows, etc.)
Please note that to be eligible for a placement in Fashion Design, you'll need experience with InDesign, strong textile skills, and some experience with sketching, Photoshop, fabric-cutting, draping or sewing.
Liberal Arts
Opportunities available in: International Relations, Media, Museums (Historical Archives), Social Services, NGOs, Sports
Your example placement tasks could include:
- Welcoming visitors, responding to enquiries and providing information
- Gathering and processing client data and creating contact lists
- Assisting with educational groups and youth program activities
- Promoting initiatives, activities and events
- Designing flyers, posters, newsletters and other marketing materials
- Updating and maintaining webpages and social media accounts
Placement expectations
An industry placement requires you to get involved in everything your field of focus has to offer – you must be willing to take part in all elements, including:
- Welcome week and shadowing
- Taking on new tasks
- Working on independent projects
- Learning the various elements of your chosen sector

- Understand your role, tasks and responsibilities
- Day 5 will look a lot different than day 25 – be patient and prove yourself
- Be enthusiastic, proactive. Take ownership of your success

Visa logistics
Non-UK students will need to apply for a Student Visa. Before you do, you must have a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from us: an electronic document, confirming you've met our requirements and hold sufficient funds.
- Prepare your supporting documents
- Apply via the UKVI website as soon as you get your CAS
- Choose a service: standard (15 days), priority (5 days), super priority (next day)
- Pay your visa fee and your Immigration Health Surcharge
- Book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre
- Wait for your decision
Please allow sufficient time to apply for Student visa to avoid disappointment.
Student FAQs
What happens if I don’t like the company I interview with?
We do our best to match you with the company most suited to your skills and goals – so, nine times out of ten, the interview goes well. If it doesn’t seem like a good fit, let us know! The AIFS Abroad Program Advisor will work with you to see where the mark was missed, and advise you how to move forward.
What should I do if I have a problem once I’m on site?
All sites have an AIFS Abroad Location Coordinator. They are the your first point of contact for questions. You’ll receive your contact information on arrival.
What will my schedule be?
You should expect to work full time (up to 40 hours per week). Most schedules will be 9-5, but it’s entirely up to you and your host company to work out your exact working schedule, including whether you'll be required to work any evenings or weekends.
Is the industry placement paid?
The internships are unpaid, but some companies may offer small compensations.
Are my travel expenses covered?
Travel to and from your internship is an additional cost that you'll need to factor into your budget.
