Cultivating Possibility by Mekhala Moholkar

“I wanted to celebrate the Regent’s difference in my own artistic way” – Mekhala Moholkar on creating Haritah

Regent's graduate exhibits artwork on campus

We love hearing about how being a student at Regent’s has influenced and inspired graduates when creating and exploring creative or entrepreneurial personal projects.

Here, MA Luxury Brand Management graduate Mekhala Moholkar speaks about the inspiration behind ‘Haritah’, a collection of artworks which will be displayed on campus this Autumn.

“After studying at Regent’s for almost a year now, I’ve experienced the Regent’s difference firsthand. Before graduating from Regent’s in September 2024, I wanted to take the opportunity to share my experience with the student community in my own artistic way, which is where the idea for this collection was born,” says Mekhala.

A Fashion Designer with more than 4 years’ diverse industry experience and an expertise in hand-drawn Print and Embroidery Design, Mekhala draws inspiration from her Indian roots to weave beautiful tapestries of prints and patterns.

For this collection of artworks for Regent’s, 'Haritah', meaning green in Sanskrit, Mekhala drew inspiration from Blue Pottery, an Indian craft native to Jaipur, one of the cities she has worked in.

The collection features four artworks, which together, weave the Regent’s values and promise into one artistic thread.

Cultivating Possibility

Regent’s University London’s aim of cultivating possibility is achieved by harnessing the power of symbiosis through rich relationships between students, encouraging them to explore evolution and transformation, and providing them with global, real-world professional connections.

Mekhala depicts this voyage of cultivation and exploration through three phases of an intricately drawn flower growing and reaching maturity.

This is representative of the change students see in themselves which starts when they first set foot in Regent’s to when they graduate with a Regent’s degree, ready to cultivate possibility on their own.

Symbiosis

At Regent’s, we have students from over 140 countries. Through this cosmopolitanism, Regent’s harnesses the power of symbiosis by bringing together a tight-knit, multicultural student community.

Mekhala, who hails from India, represents this idea in her artwork with a co-existing play of organic and geometric elements – with the flower representing the organic element, and the diamond representing its geometric counterpart.

While these elements are essentially different in their nature, they achieve a harmony when they co-exist, reflecting the student experience at Regent’s, where individual journeys are enriched by being surrounded multicultural peers and being in the multicultural city of London.

Transformation

Driving transformation is one of Regent’s’ core philosophies. The students at Regent’s are encouraged to transform aspects of their knowledge, their perspectives, and their personalities.

Mekhala brings this idea of transformation to life in her artwork by keeping the core characteristics of an intricately patterned square intact but playing with the angle to transform it into a diamond.

This reflects the fact that Regent’s not just respects, but celebrates, the individuality of each of its students, and that it pushes them to polish and transform themselves both personally and professionally, while empowering them to do so in a way that maintains their own core values.

Connection

Regent’s strives to ensure that its students graduate with invaluable, real-world connections – both personal and professional.

Mekhala showcases this idea of connection by building on Gestalt’s Law of Closure, which suggests that even if there is a break in an object, we are inclined to perceive the object as a whole by connecting the dots.

Here, her unique artwork pushes the viewer to form a connection between the distinct lines to visualise a complete square – reflecting the way in which a Regent’s education instils in students the ability to establish industry connections.

“It was a great pleasure to design for Regent’s’ brand image and values. I am excited for future students to experience the Regent’s difference and to connect with what I’ve created,” says Mekhala.

“Having been a part of the Regent’s community for four years and having seen these values in action, I feel honoured as a writer to contribute to this amazing initiative by Mekhala by way of these narratives,” adds Saatwik.

Mekhala’s artwork will be on display in the Knapp Gallery, Regent's University London, from 5 September to mid-October 2024.
